Monday 17 January

we arrived in Accra at 9 pm. Accra time is the same as UK so no jet lag. there was a truck stuck on the tarmac in front of our parking bay which took an hour to move and then our luggage was the last to arrive. Richy from ATS travel was there to meet us and he had come in Gifty's car with her driver. It all looked very promising. The car had been parked wrongly while waiting for us and when the driver pulled up in front of the entrance for us about 6 policemen ran out to put a clamp on the car. Although Richy said he would pay the fine straight away they locked the clamp which then took an hour to get off the wheel. We arrived at the motel after midnight. it was full but they arranged for us to go to another motel which was not far. We were greeted there and given a room with a double bed en suit facilities. The shower was broken but we were given a bucket to wash in. So all was well.
The people looked after us and gave us a great breakfast before Richy picked us up to go to Crystal Motel to see where the students would stay when going to do their voluntary work. it was a good student facility and the pele running it did a good job. Our taxi had no breaks and Rischy had to push it to get it started but it all seemed to work ok for the driver.
we went onto the office where Richy introduced us to Gifty who was in charge of our trip and who ran the volunteer programme on Ghana. after going over the volunteer contract Gifty took us out to lunch to a great place where we ate Ghanian food. very spoiling and then back to the office before getting a taxi to Bid Millys where we would stay the night. traffic in Accra at 4.30 in the middle of rush hour Was an experience We had a lovely welcome at big millys. It was a camp with well designed small houses to sleep 2 to 4 people there was an out door eating area overlooking the beach and2outside bars A large overland truck was parked and all the people on it were sleeping in tents for the night . Big milly turned out to be a delightful English lady whose surname was Miller so the locals called her Milly. we had a lovely room with two beds and en suit with a curtain for door. No hot water of course. We had lovely supper and went to bed early. slept well
